Chaos at the farmers’ market: peeping toms once again hinder large-scale operations in Vienna

Date:

After numerous spectators hindered the work of the police on Friday evening during an operation around Reumannplatz in Vienna-Favoriten, excitement arose again on Saturday at a market on Leibnitzgasse: two men were attacked with a metal pole. But instead of clearing the way for the emergency services, several onlookers again prevented the arrests.

It was during their patrol duty when officers from the Favoriten city police command noticed a scuffle at the market in Leibnitzgasse around 1:40 p.m. Suddenly, a 19-year-old Syrian and a 21-year-old Austrian allegedly grabbed a metal pole and attacked two men (30 and 44 years old).

Bystanders prevented arrest
The emergency services immediately wanted to arrest the two suspects. However, this was not easy due to several bystanders: the work of the police was sometimes hindered and repeated attempts were made to catch the suspects. Nevertheless, the two men were arrested by the police, but no metal bar could be found.

Debt conflicts escalated
The 44-year-old suffered minor injuries in the attack and had to be treated by paramedics and taken to hospital. The injured man also accused the suspect of damaging his scales. “The two arrested persons did not admit to the charges and stated that during a dispute over financial debts, all involved attacked each other,” police said on Sunday. There was a complaint against the two suspects.

Emergency services were already hampered on Friday
In less than 24 hours, onlookers in Favoriten made it difficult to make two arrests in attacks near Reumannplatz. There was also an argument between four men on Friday evening. Two of them were seriously injured; they had been stabbed with a knife. According to police, passersby tried to avoid both arrests and first aid.
