A fire broke out early on Sunday morning on the Stoffenalm in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. High above the valley, a stable building was on fire. Fire brigade, mountain rescue and even two helicopters were in action.
The Saalbach-Hinterglemm fire brigade was called to the operation in extremely difficult terrain at 8.15 am on Sunday morning. A fire broke out on the Stoffenalm at approximately 1,550 meters above sea level.
The Alm, located in the Schwarzachergraben and only open in summer, is extremely difficult to reach in winter. The Saalbach volunteer fire brigade could only reach about two kilometers from the Alm. The helpers then had to count on support from mountain rescue and Hinterglemmer Bergbahnen.
“It wasn’t easy, we couldn’t go all the way up because of the snow,” says local fire chief Michael Eberharter. Finally, the emergency services drove up the snowy path to the alm with quads and ski boxes.
Helicopter retrieved water from storage pond
Moreover, air support was requested when the alarm was raised. A helicopter from Salzburg took care of the transport of materials and personnel to the Stoffenalm. A helicopter from Tyrol provided, among other things, the transport of fire-fighting water.
While firefighters from Saalbach, Viehhofen and Maishofen fought the fire on the Alm, the helicopter flew to the scene of the fire with a tank of firefighting water from the storage pond in Hinterglemm. The lift and skiing operations of the Westgipfel and Unterschwarzach cable cars in the valley also had to be stopped for the duration of the flights.
It was possible to prevent the disease from spreading to two alpine buildings. The fire was finally extinguished around noon. In total, approximately 100 emergency services and cable car workers were present.
Guests at an alpine pasture on the other side of the valley discovered the fire around 8 a.m. and then called the fire brigade.
