Refugee rescue from cold death in Austria: A hiker discovered young people at an altitude of about 1200 meters in the Rosental.
A hiker (61) heard cries for help from the forest in the Carinthian Bärengraben in Rosental on Sunday. He came across a boy who was severely hypothermic and injured while sitting in the steep forest and immediately called emergency services.
“His health was poor,” mountain rescuers say. According to the police, this is a Syrian who entered the country illegally. “The 14-year-old was on his way to Austria via the Karawanken – whether that alone is being investigated,” said Gerald Tatzgern, head of the Central Office for Combating Smuggling Crime, calling it “an exceptional individual case.”
“It rarely or never happens”
“With us this happens very rarely or not at all! The action may have been an act of desperation on the part of the boy. He could have gotten lost,” it is believed. According to Tatzgern, the so-called foot dragging only extends for a few kilometers and takes place near border crossings.
“We have no refugee routes over steep, snow-covered mountains!” A similar situation only occurred this winter at the three-country point near Villach. “The mountain rescue team had to come out to help a refugee family who had gotten lost.”
Smugglers are currently avoiding Austria. “The number of fears has dropped by 50%. We only receive about forty people per day.”
