Ruling in trial – attempted murder of Taxler: ‘I thought I was going to die’

Date:

A 28-year-old had to appear in court on Tuesday for attempted murder and aggravated robbery. Last year he seriously injured a taxi driver with numerous stab wounds. The judgment is not final.

Following a brutal knife attack on a taxi driver in Breitenfurt (Mödling district) in September 2023, a 28-year-old was sentenced to 19 years in prison by the Wiener Neustadt Regional Court on Tuesday. The suspect is said to have seriously injured the then 49-year-old with approximately 35 stab wounds. The man was found guilty of, among other things, attempted murder. He was also admitted to a forensic therapeutic center. The judgment is not final.

The question about attempted murder was answered affirmatively by seven of the eight jurors. The suspect was also found guilty – unanimously – of serious theft, criminal damage and a crime under the Weapons Act. The victim received 14,722 euros. The attempt and the confession had a mitigating effect on the sentence. What made matters even more difficult was the “extremely brutal and treacherous approach”, according to chairman Birgit Borns.

Fight behind the car
The suspect, born in Chechnya, allegedly stabbed the taxi driver from behind with a pocket knife while driving in the early morning hours of September 11, 2023. The 28-year-old told the court that he wanted to rob a taxi driver, “took a knife and stabbed him a few times from behind”, and: “I couldn’t control myself.”

The then 49-year-old then jumped out of the vehicle and held the door closed to prevent the attacker from getting out. The 28-year-old left the car on the other side and a fight broke out behind the car. The suspect allegedly pulled out a Stanley knife.

The driver then got back into the car and drove away. The 28-year-old is said to have gotten stuck through the open window. The car then left the road and ended up on its side in the ditch. The suspect allegedly ran after him and sprayed the Turkish-born driver again with pepper spray.

The suspect then stole the driver’s backpack. The victim was able to press the emergency call button and was left covered in blood. “I thought I was dying,” the man said. Then he lost consciousness. The seriously injured 49-year-old was taken to a hospital in Vienna.

The 28-year-old was arrested in Mödling two days after the crime. After repeated inquiries on Tuesday, he cited lack of money as the motive.
