Fresh snow of up to 80 centimeters at higher altitudes creates a high avalanche risk on the mountain. Thanks to truck dosing and other measures, traffic on the Tyrolean highways was able to run smoothly despite the snowfall. There was no chaos like two weeks ago.
Despite the fresh snow, traffic on Tyrolean roads was guaranteed without significant delays. The state of Tyrol announced that measures had been taken by Asfinag or the police on the Inntal or Brenner highways. Truck measurements at Kufstein and checks along the connecting roads ensured a smooth flow of traffic on the Brenner corridor. This was in operation from 5 a.m. Only 100 trucks per hour were allowed to pass the counting point in Kufstein.
Good flow on highways
State Councilor for Transport René Zumtobel said: “The action plan discussed last week between the highway operator ASFINAG, the police and the state of Tyrol in the event of extreme snowfall on the Brenner Pass has had its first test.” The goal was therefore achieved and traffic flow was ‘guaranteed at all times’.
The situation was closely monitored to respond with further measures if necessary. “Given the current rainfall intensity and the good condition of the road, some measures were withdrawn during the morning, but due to further snowfall, the situation will continue to be monitored all day,” reports Bernhard Knapp, Head of State. traffic department.
Roadblocks nonetheless
Although the situation on the highways was relaxed, roadblocks still had to be set up in some regions. The avalanche committee is continuously assessing the situation to decide how to proceed with the road closures. Here’s an overview:
- The Ötztalstraße between Zwieselstein and Obergurgl
- The Venter Straße between Zwieselstein and Vent
- The Ranalter national road between Ranalt and Mutterbergalm.
The avalanche danger is increasing enormously
Due to the amount of fresh snow up to 80 centimeters, the avalanche warning service of the state of Tyrol has issued an avalanche danger level of 4 (high avalanche danger) for the southern Ötztal Alps. In other parts there is significant avalanche danger (level 3). The country therefore calls for extreme caution and restraint.
“After the large amounts of new snow, we should expect there to be further avalanches in the coming days,” explains State Councilor Astrid Mair and Patrick Nairz, head of the state’s avalanche warning service, adds: “Small changes in the weather have a big impact, especially in the spring the avalanche danger.”
