Thousands of cars fewer – attack: Tesla is paralyzed for several days

Date:

After the attack on the power supply of the Tesla factory in Grünheide near Berlin, the factory is currently down for several days. Plant manager Andre Thierig estimated the damage at a high triple-digit figure in millions. No more than 1,000 vehicles could be produced per day.

The basic price per electric car is 45,000 euros. As reported, a fire in a power pylon near the Tesla factory interrupted the power supply on Tuesday. In a letter posted online, the company demanded “Exit Tesla Volcano Group!” take responsibility for the crime. The organization is classified as left-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. It had already claimed responsibility for an attack on overhead power lines to the Tesla factory construction site that was carried out in 2021.

Real confession letter
According to a police spokeswoman, the letter is genuine (see video above). “If it is confirmed that there is a left-wing extremist motive here, it shows the dangers that left-wing extremism entails,” said a spokesperson for the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. About one in four left-wing extremists and one in four left-wing extremists would be classified as violence-oriented.

German Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) spoke of a crime that needed to be solved. Although the freedom to demonstrate is a valuable asset, the political debate must not be allowed to lag behind. “It is an attack on all companies that want to invest in Brandenburg and Germany. I see that the state has an urgent obligation to protect our economy against this,” said Carsten Christ, chairman of the East Brandenburg Chamber of Commerce.

Government: isolated case
Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit condemned the attack, but at the same time emphasized that it was an isolated case. “I would now like to warn against alarmism.” The government is already working on legal requirements on how to better protect critical infrastructure. A substation or a power station is certainly easier to protect than a utility pole standing in the open. “But that is also why we want to enshrine minimum standards in law.”

Security authorities have now reopened the scene of the damage. The power outage in the Grünheide region also disrupted activities in a large logistics center of the Edeka retail chain. Supermarkets could only be supplied to a limited extent. “We hope that we can resume activities later today with several additional emergency generators. It is still unclear when the regular power supply can be restored by the service provider,” the company said on Wednesday afternoon.
