General Saluschnyj – Ex-military chief becomes Kiev’s man in London

Date:

General Valery Zalushnyj, who was dismissed as commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces about a month ago, will become the new ambassador to Britain. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken out in favor of appointing Saluzhnyj to the post, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kiev announced on Thursday evening.

Now the British side still has to officially agree to it. Last July, Zelenskiy recalled the then Ukrainian ambassador to London, Vadym Prystajko, shortly after publicly criticizing him.

Zalushnyj, on the other hand, was very popular with the people during his time as commander-in-chief, but is said to have had a difficult relationship with Zelenskyj. Under his leadership, the Ukrainian army recaptured parts of the Russian-occupied territories in the first year of the war in 2022, but a summer offensive in 2023 fell short of sometimes high expectations.

On February 8, Zalushnyj was removed from his position. Colonel General Olexander Syrskyj was appointed as his successor.

London promotes long-range weapons
The British government is now lobbying Germany for long-range weapons. “As far as long-range weapons are concerned, I can say from Britain’s experience how effective these weapons have been in helping Ukraine fight illegal aggression,” Foreign Secretary James Cameron said Thursday after meeting with the German minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock in Berlin.

Britain supplies Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine, among other things. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) rejects the supply of Taurus cruise missiles with longer range from the Bundeswehr, because he fears that Germany will become involved in the war.

London: delivery is not an escalation!
Cameron strongly opposed the theory that the delivery of new weapons systems could lead to an escalation of the war. This debate has been going on again and again since the Russian invasion two years ago. It said: “Giving anti-tank weapons to Ukraine is an escalation. No, it wasn’t. Giving tanks to Ukraine is an escalation. No, it wasn’t. Giving Ukraine long-range artillery or long-range missiles is an escalation. No, that’s not it.”
