You are virtually alone if problems arise with a holiday trip booked via an internet platform. Because most providers reject it: they are only intermediaries, but not organizers.
This also applies to the well-known (and popular) platform “Opodo”. A family of four booked a holiday in Mallorca there. And that was already in 2020. But then came Corona. With a travel warning for the Spanish island. The flight was canceled by the airline and the hotel was closed.
Who reimburses the costs?
It took a year for the family to receive the money from the airline. The written off hotel costs of 1750 euros were still outstanding. And the family was sent on a well-known “merry-go-round”: the hotel said that Opodo was the contract partner and was responsible for the return transfer, Opodo said they were just an intermediary between the hotel and the customer, so the hotel was responsible after all.
Refund without court
At one point it was too colorful for the family, they turned to the VKI – and sent a lawsuit. Look at this: the money had barely arrived at the company with the “real name” Vacaciones eDreams based in Madrid (Spain). And completely. Because: in this case, the family had booked the flight AND the hotel via the internet platform, so Opodo was also a tour operator and not just an agent. And therefore in liability.
By the way: the family was not an isolated case, other victims were also promptly refunded the amounts already paid. Without trial…
