The US has warned of an increased terrorist threat in Moscow. Extremists have attacked the Russian capital. Now the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is following suit and making Austrian citizens aware of the new dangerous situation.
Following other Western countries, the Austrian Foreign Ministry also warned on Friday of possible attacks in the Russian capital: “Due to widespread reports, there is currently an increased risk of terrorism.”
According to the Foreign Ministry website, Austrian citizens staying in the Moscow region are therefore urged to exercise special caution and avoid large gatherings.
Series of attacks planned?
The US embassy in Moscow had earlier published a warning to its own citizens on Thursday evening, writing about reports that extremists are planning attacks on large gatherings of people in the Russian capital over the next 48 hours and until Saturday evening.
It was not clear which messages and extremists were involved. Russian media in exile Meduza speculated on Friday morning about a link with the dismantling of an Islamic State (IS) terrorist cell in Kaluga, Russia, announced by the domestic secret service FSB on March 7, which allegedly planned an attack. about a Jewish institute in Moscow.
There was no news Friday evening of official Russian comments on possible attacks.
Other countries take their example from the US
Regarding the US embassy, other Western ministries and embassies also issued warnings – in addition to the Austrian, British and Latvian foreign ministries, the Czech embassy in Moscow also did the same. However, the Foreign Ministry in Berlin has refrained from updating its partial travel warning for Russia.
