After several rabbits have died in the past five weeks from the contagious viral disease RHD (rabbit hemorrhagic disease), the animal welfare department of the state of Carinthia is calling for rabbit populations to be examined and vaccinated. The viral disease has been known for a long time.
“The ILV Carinthia for veterinary medical examinations has identified proven cases of the viral disease RHD in breeding animals from various regions in Carinthia. Therefore, vaccination of the rabbit population is certainly recommended,” animal welfare officer Beate Prettner calls on rabbit owners and breeders, as well as zoo operators. This viral disease becomes infected very quickly and affected animals die within one to three days.
