May 8 and June 17 – Berlin gets two extra public holidays

Date:

In Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, International Women’s Day on March 8 is a public holiday for the sixth time. But the capital plans two more days off on May 8 and June 17 – one-off.

The decision is justified by the historical relevance of the two days, as they are the anniversaries of the end of the war (May 8) and the popular uprising in the GDR (June 17).

May 8 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation from National Socialism. The workers’ uprising of 1953 is commemorated on June 17. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets, there were clashes and a hundred people were killed.

The Berlin CDU faction has already approved the corresponding proposal for a one-off holiday, reports “Bild”.

By the way, on International Women’s Day, thousands of people took to the streets in Berlin to use the holiday for political protest (see video above).
