Series ‘Krone’ about the state elections in Styria in 2024: Josef Krainer I.: The legendary governor of the state had an ear for the ‘small people’, but was also at the center of high politics. The “larch Stipfl” died during his term of office – during a hunting trip.
“It’s too far for me,” Josef Krainer senior is reported to have said on November 28, 1971, a frigid first Sunday in Advent, before lowering his rifle. The pheasant he had targeted had escaped into the gray November skies. Then the governor fell into the snow. When his companions tried to help him, he was already dead. “Sudden heartbeat,” it was said at the time. Today there is a memorial at All Saints near Wildon, right on the site of old Krainer’s death.
