A 30-year-old woman from Villach had to flee her rental apartment with her six-year-old son on Friday afternoon. Due to unknown causes, a fire broke out in the children’s room.
“The 30-year-old became aware of the fire around 3 p.m. due to strange noises coming from the children’s room,” explains HBI Harald Geissler, commander of the Villach main fire station. She then fled with her son from the rented apartment in an apartment building in Villach-Völkendorf and immediately alerted the emergency services.
Woman and child responded correctly
Three fire brigades (HWF Villach, FF Judendorf and Völkendorf) fought the fire in the children’s room with several respiratory protection teams and extinguishing lines. After half an hour the fire was under control and completely extinguished. “The resident and her child reacted correctly by immediately leaving the apartment,” Commander Harald Geissler emphasizes.
Looking for a replacement apartment
The apartment has been made smoke-free by means of pressure ventilation, but is no longer usable due to smoldering gas and flue gas. The city of Villach is trying to arrange a replacement apartment for the woman and her child. In addition, two people with suspected smoke poisoning were taken to the Villach LKH by the emergency services. The cause of the fire has yet to be clarified.
