A drug lord from Marseille who has been wanted for months was arrested in Morocco on Sunday. He is said to be the suspected leader of one of the rival gangs.
“Thanks to our cooperation with the Moroccan authorities, to whom I would like to express my gratitude, drug banditry has suffered a serious blow today,” said French Interior Minister Gérald.
The man had been wanted by Interpol for months and is considered a key player in the drug war in Marseille. The 33-year-old faces a prison sentence of ten years for, among other things, money laundering, importing and trafficking in narcotics and membership of a criminal gang.
Drug gangs dominate entire neighborhoods in France’s second-largest city, and fatal cases occur regularly. Accidental victims are not uncommon. Last year, 49 people died in drug-related disputes in Marseille, significantly more than in previous years.
