Pro-Ukrainian Russian fighters attack a town on Russian territory near the Ukrainian border. The Freedom for Russia militia said on Telegram that its fighters had destroyed an armored Russian military vehicle in the town of Tyotkino in the Kursk region.
At least two Ukraine-based armed groups say they have crossed the border and launched attacks into Russia from Ukraine.
The governor of Kursk confirmed the attack and reported that one person was slightly injured, but denied any “breakthrough” by the attackers. Other official bodies in Russia were initially unavailable for comment.
The “Legion Freedom for Russia” and the “Siberian Battalion” are said to be Russians hostile to the regime – their information on social media cannot be initially verified.
“A criminal regime cannot be overthrown peacefully”
The “Siberian Battalion” publishes videos of fighters on Telegram and writes: “We have already said that it will not be possible to peacefully overthrow the criminal dictatorial regime in the Russian Federation.”
“It can only be eliminated with the weapon in hand. Tonight we started to deliver on that promise. Fierce fighting is taking place on the territory of the Russian Federation.” The article ends with a call to join “all forces of liberation.”
No official action from Ukraine
A spokesman for Ukrainian military intelligence told Ukrainian media that the groups carried out the operation independently of Ukraine on Russian territory. A third group is also involved, the “Russian Volunteer Corps”.
The “Legion Freedom for Russia” and the “Russian Volunteer Corps” have already taken responsibility for other previous cross-border operations.
