Mercadona has increased its net profit by 40% 1009 million euros in 2023, after registering a 15% increase in sales, which amounted to 35,527 million of euros.

This is what the president of Mercadona stated: Juan Roigduring the company’s annual press conference in which it communicated Mercadona’s economic data for the year 2023 and forecasts for 2024. The event was attended by company executives, including the chain’s vice president, Hortensia Herrero.

The supermarket company has achieved a turnover of approximately 34 billion in Spain and 1.4 billion in Portugal, increasing its market share in Spain by 0.6% to 27.6% of the total. In Portugal the market share has increased to 8%.

This is the first year in which the company has not suffered any losses in Portugal since it started its journey in the Portuguese market. In addition, Mercadona grew by 5,000 permanent contract jobs compared to the previous year, reaching a workforce of 104,000 people in the two countries.

Mercadona has 31 stores in Euskadi, the majority in Bizkaia (17), followed by Gipuzkoa, with eight stores, and Álava, where it has six stores and a logistics block, employing more than 2,400 employees. In Navarre it has 11 supermarkets and more than 700 employees.

Precisely, Mercadona workers in Álava gathered this Tuesday in front of a company store in Vitoria-Gasteiz to denounce that the new collective agreement signed for the years 2024-2028 “deteriorates” their working conditions.

The agreement, signed by CCOO and UGT, does not include salary increases linked to the CPI and establishes a 40-hour working day per week, “higher than that of the Álava food trade agreement”, as ELA denounced in a note.
