Authorities in the Japanese city of Fukuyama have warned residents about a stray cat contaminated with chemicals. People should not touch the animal under any circumstances and should call the police immediately if they see it, the city government said on Tuesday.
The cat had apparently fallen into a vat of a dangerous chemical in a factory. According to the factory, the accident was noticed when a worker arrived Monday morning and discovered paw prints from a cat walking away from the barrel.
Cat apparently unharmed
Surveillance camera footage shows the cat escaping from the factory premises – apparently without any external damage. As of Tuesday afternoon (local time), no sightings of the cat had been reported.
Carcinogenic content
The three-metre-deep vessel contained chromium VI, which is carcinogenic and can cause serious skin irritation. A spokesperson for the factory operator assured that the company immediately informed the police, the city council and the public after noticing the incident. “The incident has alarmed us and shown us that we need to take measures to prevent small animals like cats from sneaking in,” he said.
