When travel dreams fall apart: Daniel S. from Southern Styria has completed almost 30 cruises to some of the world’s oceans. When he reportedly complained one too many times about shortcomings and poor treatment on board, shipping company Aida quickly banned him from contact and travel.
Daniel S. is a talkative person. And extremely friendly. But what happened to Southern Styria leaves even him speechless now. S. has preferred to book cruises for years due to illness: “It is a way for me to get away from everyday life. And I love the salty sea air.” But the quality on the ships has deteriorated in recent years, he describes in an interview with “Krone”.
Dishwashing liquid instead of water, bitten tooth
This led to several unfortunate incidents and unpleasant events. For example, in December 2023 he was promised an on-board loan, but he only received it when the ship was already in the destination port. Which made it worthless. He bit a tooth out of a piece of contaminated bread. Much worse: Daniel S. was abused during another stay. He was given dish soap instead of distilled water. So there were plenty of reasons to complain.
“I have done nothing”
When the South Styrian booked his trip to the Canary Islands in January and the associated flights scheduled for mid-March, he was in for a rude awakening. Aida has denied S. access to the house. A day later he was no longer allowed to make any contact. “I didn’t do anything,” S. rightly complains, also about his lawyer Manuel Novak. Requests from the lawyer led to Aida agreeing to reimburse the costs a few days before the start of the original trip.
Styria remains open to dialogue
However, Daniel S. does not go far enough. After all, he had already planned his holiday, but is now at home instead of in the Canary Islands. In any case, he doesn’t understand why the people at Aida don’t want to talk to him anymore. “I am still open to dialogue. But I can’t do more than lend a hand,” says S. sadly. The shipping company only responded to a request from “Krone” with a reference to data protection.
