After a negative Google review, a restaurant owner from Linz allegedly threatened the critic by telephone. But in court everything suddenly turned out to be different than expected. The suspect was acquitted of the charge of serious coercion. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
“You lose your appetite” and “Stop using the cheapest of everything,” a 31-year-old wrote about a pizzeria in Linz on Google, and much more. This apparently angered the innkeeper so much that he threatened to “burn down” the woman’s house. That is why he now had to appear in court for serious coercion.
Bizarre background:
But suddenly everything during the trial turned out differently than expected. “She was a regular at my restaurant and wanted a relationship with me, but I turned her down,” which the restaurateur said was the reason for the bad review. “I then asked her via WhatsApp to delete the review.” However, he never threatened her.
However, the customer denied this accusation. The relationship is said to have been purely amicable on both sides: “I write a lot of Google reviews. The review was serious. I don’t like the food there.”
It was complicated
However, this statement made little sense to the suspect. To remove her review, she allegedly asked him to be invited for the next order. “But if she doesn’t like it, why would she want to eat it again?” said the innkeeper. Moreover, a few weeks after the bad review, she ordered food there again via Lieferando.
The verdict was clear for the court: the suspect was acquitted. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
