Leftists are catching up – Italy: Meloni’s party is weakening, Salvini is stable

Date:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party is losing support, according to a new poll. The two coalition partners Lega and Forza Italia are stable.

The popularity of Meloni’s party fell from 28.2 percent to 27.1 percent in one month.

The ruling party Lega of Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has 8.1 percent of the votes, the Forza Italia of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who died in June, has 7.6 percent. This is evident from a study by opinion research institute SWG, carried out on behalf of television channel La7.

The Social Democrats benefit and are in second place
The opposition Democratic Party (PD) is benefiting from the loss of popularity of Meloni’s party. The Social Democrats managed to win 20.2 percent of the vote and came second among the strongest parties in Italy. This represents an increase of 0.2 percent last month, the study showed. The gap with Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia has therefore fallen below seven percent. The opposition’s left-wing populist Five Star Movement had to make do with 15.2 percent of the votes, a decrease of 0.4 percent compared to the last poll a month ago.

Meloni’s party won the regional elections in Abruzzo
The right-wing coalition around Meloni won a clear victory on Sunday in regional elections in the central Italian region of the Apennines, Abruzzo. The Meloni-backed candidate for the region’s presidency, Marco Marsilio, won with 53 percent of the votes and was thus re-elected for a second mandate. His opponent from the center-left camp, Luciano D’Amico, had to settle for 46 percent of the votes.

Meloni, Italy’s first female prime minister, faces new election dates. After the elections in Abruzzo, regional elections will take place in the southern Italian region of Basilicata on April 21 and 22. On June 8 and 9, elections will take place in Piedmont, northern Italy, parallel to the European elections.
