Ukrainian forces are fortunate that Russian forces are not currently intensifying attacks in some areas – at least according to a current analysis by the Institute for War Studies (ISW) in Washington. Some parts of the front are particularly poorly equipped.
The analysis shows that Ukrainian forces currently need to prioritize their resources. This means that they must use the little material they have as efficiently as possible to prevent the continued Russian advance. “Ukrainian prioritization of sectors most at risk from intensive Russian offensives could create vulnerabilities elsewhere that Russian forces could exploit for sudden and surprising advances,” the ISW wrote.
“We can’t hold on for long”
According to a “Spiegel” report, this has consequences for areas such as Kharkiv and Vuhledar, which are currently in the shadow of other war zones. The Ukrainian armed forces there lack personnel, weapons and ammunition. This position can only be partially maintained because the Russian forces are not “attacking with full force.” In other words, in the event of a major offensive, Ukrainian soldiers would likely not be able to resist for long.
“The current front line is probably not stable. Timely Western resources for Ukrainian forces are essential to prevent Russia from exploiting an opportunity for a breakthrough in a vulnerable sector of the front,” the analysis said.
New weapon packs
Supporters of Ukraine have been negotiating for further aid for months recently. On Wednesday evening, the EU decided to increase the aid fund by five billion euros and thus make weapons, ammunition and other goods available. The largest supporter – the US government – also announced an aid package with military equipment.
