His team posthumously published a message from Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. In the last days before his death, he had prepared a contribution on the occasion of the upcoming elections. For undecided voters, he had a mobile phone app developed that randomly creates a name that you can tick next to.
It’s been almost a month since Navalny died mysteriously in the Siberian “Polar Wolf” prison camp. But the opposition leader has one final message for his supporters. He did not want to leave the presidential elections, which take place from Friday to Sunday, undiscussed.
Navalny’s final message is published in this video:
App generates new presidential candidate
After six candidates against incumbent leader Vladimir Putin were rejected by the election commission for questionable reasons, there is little choice in the vote in the world’s largest country. Shortly before his death, Navalny had an idea how to solve this problem. He developed the app ‘Foton’, which spits out the name of a random candidate at the touch of a button.
Navalny: “I don’t have that problem – I’m not allowed to vote”
“Depending on your worldview, you can assume that God, nature, chaos, cosmos, chance or the mother walrus made the decision for you,” Navalny said of the app. With his usual sarcasm, he also said, “You are suffering and I am doing well. I don’t have this problem. Inmates are not allowed to vote.”
Navalny’s comrade-in-arms also suggested a specific time for the vote. Putin’s opponents are expected to arrive at the polling stations at noon on Sunday, the main election day. “We must use election day to show that we are here and that there are many of us,” Navalny’s widow Yulia Navalnaya said. With this subtle protest you could express your rejection of the despot.
Navalny’s close confidant Leonid Volkov, who was recently attacked with a hammer in front of his home, recommended checking the boxes for at least two names on the ballots, but ideally for all four candidates. This would make the ballot invalid.
Volkov said many people would feel anger, annoyance and powerlessness after Navalny’s death. A change of power in Russia cannot be achieved through elections, because the results are manipulated. The only thing that can be done is to put pressure on the apparatus of power.
