A very spectacular accident took place this weekend in the Turkish container port of Evyap, about 100 kilometers south of Istanbul. A container ship rammed the pier, causing three large harbor cranes to topple. There was enormous material damage.
The Hong Kong-registered, 368-metre-long container ship YM Witness failed to stop in time as it entered the port on Saturday, ramming the pier and then overturning three cranes used to load and unload the containers.
The accident left one seriously injured
Video footage shows dock workers running for their lives as the cranes are pushed and eventually fall over. According to Turkish media reports, one of the operators of one of the downed cranes was seriously injured.
The local port authority also reported that several containers had been thrown from the ship into the port basin. The cause of the accident was unclear and local authorities are investigating the incident, Turkish media said.
