Excitement in Slovakia: a bear had wandered from the nearby national park into the densely populated residential area of the city of Liptovský Mikuláš. Numerous video images from eyewitnesses show how the animal ran through the streets in complete disarray. Some drivers tried to scare the animal away by honking loudly.
But that may have made the situation even worse. Startled by the sound, the animal started attacking passers-by. Five people were injured: a 10-year-old girl, two women aged 49 and 58 and two men aged 32 and 72. They suffered abrasions, bites and abrasions. The bear was eventually driven from the residential area. The victims have now been able to leave the hospital again.
Mayor Ján Blcháč called an emergency meeting in the town hall. There were representatives of the Slovak Ministry of the Environment, members of the intervention team for the protection of brown bears, the state police, hunting associations and of course the nearby national parks. The father of an injured man was also present. Liptovský Mikuláš has about 30,000 inhabitants and is located about 200 kilometers northeast of the Slovak capital Bratislava.
According to observations, the bear is moving towards the forests between Iľanovo and Závažná Poruba. Yet the situation remains tense. The city mobilized an extensive security presence, including six patrols with drones, thermal vision, night vision goggles and camera traps, to ensure the safety of residents. Emergency services were given clear instructions to eliminate the bear if it tried to re-enter populated areas.
