After the terrible knife attack on Sunday in Vienna-Favoriten, in which a 21-year-old man was seriously injured, the police were now able to arrest the suspect. It concerns a Syrian who is only 18 years old. The teenager is said to have previously harassed several women with a group on Reumannplatz.
In fact, the young witness only wanted to help the women. But then the 18-year-old troublemaker suddenly chased him with a knife on Reumannplatz and stabbed the 21-year-old several times. He was able to save himself and the group of young people ran away.
Suspect arrested by police
The injured person had to receive immediate medical care from emergency services. “A tourniquet was applied to his thigh,” police reported Monday. The police immediately started looking for the suspect. The investigators have already caught him. The Vienna police confirmed this to the Crown on Tuesday morning.
The Syrian’s murder weapon was also found and seized by officers.
Juvenile crime must be combated
After Sunday’s attack, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner also went to the crime scene on Monday evening to get an idea of the police’s focus on youth crime. The reason for this is the planned Youth Crime Task Force (EJK), which must, among other things, carry out checks in public spaces. “If youth gangs commit mischief, the police will intervene with all the force of the law,” assured the ÖVP minister.
In the future, the EJK will identify hotspots, identify youth gang members, quickly recognize new phenomena and take appropriate countermeasures. The findings of the task force will therefore be included in an interdepartmental working group.
