Within minutes, a severe thunderstorm broke out in the St. Veit an der Glan neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The “Krone” spoke to district fire chief Friedrich Monai about the damage and the clean-up work.
Late Thursday afternoon, severe thunderstorms moved over the St. Veit an der Glan district. Numerous “Krone” readers reported and reported massive amounts of hail. “It only lasted a few minutes, but it was intense,” says one of them.
Numerous Armed Forces in Action
“Many fire brigades had to go outside. We are currently busy cleaning up after the storm,” explains district fire chief Friedrich Monai. Some basements were also flooded during the violent storm. The commander also reports numerous storm damage.
Hailstones the size of a golf ball
It was just as intense on the Völkermarkt. Here too, “Krone” readers report hail and heavy rain. The hail completely covered streets, meadows and parking lots. Some hailstones were the size of a golf ball. According to the first information from the fire service, many houses have been covered. “A total of 15 fire brigades are currently deployed in the district,” said commander Patrick Skubel of the Völkermarkt district fire brigade in an interview with “Krone”. The town of Völkermarkt and the town of St. Margarethen am Töllerberg are particularly affected.
The population of the Völkermarkt was not spared a second storm. That is why the district crisis management team was also stepped up.
Second storm in a few days
Only last Friday there were severe storms in large parts of Carinthia. There was then damage of half a million euros.
