The “disaster” of an animal in Slovakia is also raising alarm bells among local wildlife experts.
In the small Slovak town of Liptovský Mikulás, a brown bear injured five people. Since then, the small town has been under a state of emergency. While a large contingent searches for the animal, many no longer dare to take to the streets – no wonder given the video footage of the bear attack. They show the bear running towards a couple with a stroller. When it swerves at the last moment, the animal turns around and starts hunting for a new target.
“A wild predator will always remain that way,” explains Viennese hunting expert Rudolf Gürtler. “I strongly warn you – if it is somehow avoidable – not to go near a bear. The one in Slovakia is definitely a problem one,” says the hunter legend.
The animal was probably also panicking
What makes the situation even worse: “Due to this short winter, the starving bears are more likely to look for food and are currently moving into the city. Master Petz was probably just as panicked as the people who got too close to him.”
Inventories are increasing. Also because in many places hunting was stopped after animal lovers became angry about it – even though they live far away and safe from the bears. “To the suffering of the rural population, who are bearing the consequences of the increased confrontations.” Yet humans are not part of the prey spectrum. Expert advice: “Instead of running away, it would make more sense to huddle together.” But you have to be nervous when you’re being sniffed.
