Thirteen miners were buried in a falling rock at a gold mine in the Amur region of eastern Russia on Monday. The miners were trapped at a depth of about 125 meters, Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry of Emergencies, communication with the miners is being restored and the mechanical evacuation of the access tunnel is being carried out. President Vladimir Putin has issued instructions to do everything possible to rescue the men, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Images released by the Ministry of Emergency Situations (see video above) show helicopters on a snowy landing site and a column of rescuers near the accident site, the “Pioneer Mine” near the Chinese border, one of Russia’s largest gold mines.
Accidents often happen due to lax safety regulations
Accidents happen quite often in Russian mines because safety regulations are often not adhered to. According to local authorities, a criminal case has already been initiated for violating safety regulations.
