Four Hungarians – one man and three women – are said to have lured ten men (aged 56 to 85) into a Venus trap in five states via a dating platform, drugged them with drinks and then robbed them. The damage amounts to approximately 90,000 euros. The police expect many more victims.
Vienna-Döbling, Vienna-Donaustadt, Vienna-Leopoldstadt, Linz, Wels (both Upper Austria), Ramsau (Styria), St. Veit an der Glan (Carinthia), Güssing (Burgenland) – a total of ten men from five states between reported to the police in September and November 2023. According to the story, in their apartments and houses they met Hungarian women whom they had previously met on a reputable dating platform. However, they couldn’t remember much about it.
Benzodiazepine in the drinks
The men, aged 56 to 85, ignored the fact that the Hungarian women did not look like the photos they had previously viewed. They were too distracted by the not unattractive Venus traps. They waited until their hosts had to go to the toilet and then mixed a cocktail of benzodiazepines and other drugs into the gentlemen’s drinks. According to Major Armin Kuric of the Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department, Northern Division, some victims did not wake up until the next day – with dizziness that caused them to fall.
Watches, jewelry and cash in the sights
Meanwhile, the women notified acquaintances who were waiting in their cars outside the houses. They took everything from the victims that was not nailed down and even tore a wall safe from its anchorage. The gang was mainly interested in watches, jewelry and money. The track record is mixed. The Hungarians took only 50 euros from a man from Döbling, while a man from Linz lost 33,500 euros and a man from Donaustadt lost 23,200 euros. The total damage amounts to approximately 90,000 euros. At least the ones we know. Police are asking any other possible victims to come forward immediately.
Arrests in Vienna and Linz
A suspect’s photo was secured – working with Budapest detectives, a 43-year-old Hungarian woman was eventually identified and arrested in Vienna. While she made extensive confessions, two compatriots arrested in Linz (a 52-year-old and his 28-year-old partner) denied any involvement in the crime.
Homemade medicine mixture
Another Hungarian woman (23) is said to have been present during an act. Searches revealed the bottle containing the homemade drug mixture and stolen goods. Some victims still suffer the after-effects of the sneaky robberies.
