Tons of plastic waste are piling up on the beaches of the Indonesian dream island of Bali: a flood of bottles and cups, packaging and barely recognizable waste.
The waste woes have become an annual phenomenon, caused by monsoon-influenced ocean currents, increasing ocean pollution, mass consumption and poorly functioning waste management.
Not only Bali’s beaches are polluted; Manure can also be found in forests, along river banks, around temple complexes and along the side of the road.
The situation is particularly bad at Kedonganan Beach. As the “Bali Sun” reports, eight to ten truckloads of garbage float onto the banks every day during the rainy season.
Every day, helpers collect tons of bottles, cups and packaging from the surf beach in Kuta, which are then transported by truck. But the next morning the waste piles up again. Sunbathing in plastic waste – some tourists look quite appalled at the disgusting scenario. Dream vacation looks different.
“There are simply too many people in Bali, and the Balinese themselves usually just throw their waste into the landscape – it’s almost part of the culture,” says a receptionist. “Bali is not Singapore, and it will never be as clean here.” Moreover, almost every family has “at least two cars and three motorcycles.”
Bali has been collecting tourist tax since February 2024
The government says it wants to invest the money in protecting the beautiful nature and culture of the ‘Island of the Gods’, as well as in sustainable tourism and services. Bali is the only Hindu island in Muslim Indonesia and is known for its unique traditions and rituals. However, approximately 70 percent of the money should – at least initially – go to tackling the waste problem.
