The number of births is falling and the number of baptisms is falling even more. And it is not just because there are more children with different religious beliefs that the parents’ worldview has changed. But there is a strange trend in Upper Austria: children in the second grade of primary school are being baptized – for a joint celebration!
It is an unusual trend: while fewer and fewer parents are having their children baptized Catholic after birth, the little ones often want to do this themselves. “It is increasingly common for children to be baptized at the beginning of the preparations for their First Communion and to say yes to the path of faith themselves,” says Michaela Druckenthaner, children’s ministry advisor in the Diocese of Linz.
