Line to nuclear power plant cut – massive attack on Ukrainian energy supply

Date:

Russia carried out massive drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy supplies on Friday evening. Power went out in several regions. A high-voltage line to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was also cut.

The power line in Dniprovskaya failed on Friday morning, the power plant management of the power plant occupied by the Russian army in southern Ukraine said on Telegram. Power supply is guaranteed by a replacement line and there is no risk to the safety of the nuclear power plant, the report said.

Fire at hydroelectric power station
Several energy facilities were also affected in other parts of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian information, the country’s largest dam, at the Dnipro-HES hydroelectric power station, was also hit. However, there is no risk of a rupture, says the hydroelectric power station operator. There is a fire in the facility. Employees and emergency services are present.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia used 60 Iranian Shahed drones and almost 90 missiles for overnight shelling. “The world sees very clearly the targets of Russian terrorists: power stations and power lines, the dam of a hydroelectric power station, ordinary apartment buildings and even a trolleybus,” he said. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. However, there are no official figures yet.

Air raid siren from west to east
During the night there was an air raid siren in large parts of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian anti-aircraft units, Russia has fired cruise missiles from Tu-95 strategic bombers from the Caspian Sea area. Later, attacks with drones and ballistic missiles were also reported, including the ‘Kinschal’ type. Almost all parts of Ukraine were targeted, from Lviv in the west to Donetsk in the east, from Kharkov and Sumy in the north to Odessa and Mykolaiv in the south.

“Large-scale power outage as goal”
According to official information, there were impacts on energy objects in Mykolaiv, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Lviv and Sumy, among others. “The goal is not only to damage the country’s energy system, but to try again to cause a widespread power outage, like last year,” Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko wrote on Facebook. He acknowledged multiple hits and blackouts in several regions. He also wrote that the power supply of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was also affected by the attacks.

Nuclear power plant in the front part
Europe’s largest nuclear power plant was occupied by Russian troops in March 2022, shortly after the outbreak of war. To this day it remains in the front line area and has come under fire several times. Due to safety concerns, the reactors were eventually shut down, but still require cooling.

According to the local governor, one person has been killed in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian region of Belgorod.
