Fire in Stern-Bar – Police obstructed: judge offers distraction

Date:

On the verge of the tragic New Year’s Eve fire at the Sternbar in Graz, which claimed one life, there was an argument between a 34-year-old and the police. The man was in court for this on Friday. The judge spoke of an “exceptional situation” and offered him a postponement.

“He cannot understand why he, who has behaved as well as possible, is sitting here,” said Gunther Ledolter, the lawyer for the 34-year-old man who had to appear before the regional criminal court on Friday for resisting. state authority. His client was partying with friends in the restaurant when the fire suddenly broke out. He not only helped his fallen partner get back on his feet, but also several other people “and probably saved their lives,” the lawyer said.

Beaten police officer
Outside, the 34-year-old then tried to kick in a door so that people could escape from the burning restaurant. “Then the memory is lost, suddenly he is on the ground,” the defender describes. According to police, he behaved aggressively and eventually grabbed one of the officers by the arms, whereupon the officer punched him.

De Grazer did not feel guilty. “I think there was an exceptional situation,” the judge agreed. Therefore, as an exception, he offered him a diversion. A fine of 5,400 euros must be paid, after which the case is over – provided that the Public Prosecution Service has no objections. The suspect thanked him and accepted it.
