Weight loss injections like Ozempic and Wegovy have an unexpected side effect: surprise pregnancies.
Women taking medications such as Ozempic or Wegovy are surprised by pregnancies they did not expect. Even if they were using contraception, dealing with infertility or thinking they were of childbearing age.
Pregnant despite infertility, PCOS & Co.
“Because my last pregnancy required a lengthy fertility process, I assumed that this would no longer be possible at the age of forty. Well, I’m pregnant! It wasn’t what we planned, but it was a welcome surprise,” said one user on Reddit.
Another said: “I’ve been struggling with infertility issues for years due to PCOS/insulin resistance/obesity and although I’m still overweight, I finally got a positive test!” Women taking the pill were also not safe from unplanned pregnancies.
TikTok is full of videos of moms sharing their “ozempic baby” surprises.
“I became pregnant from Semaglutide,” this Tiktok woman applauds, but warns that you should of course stop taking the medicine.
Doctors attribute this unexpected development to two main reasons:
- weight loss
It appears that the weight loss women experience while taking Ozempic regulates the menstrual cycle and increases fertility. In addition, symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – a leading cause of infertility in women – improved after treatment with the drug. - Reduced effectiveness of the pill
It is suspected that the slimming injections can influence the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill. This finding poses a significant problem for many women because it compromises the safety of their contraception.
Wegovy is a drug for weight loss, Ozempic for diabetes. The latter is also injected for weight loss – made famous by celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Elon Musk.
Both medicines contain the active substance semaglutide, which mimics the effects of an intestinal hormone and causes a feeling of satiety. Wegovy has been proven to help users lose up to 15 percent of their body weight.
