Climate protest during Easter customs: Followers of the “Last Generation” protested on Palm Sunday at the traditional palm dedication in Weiz, Eastern Styria. Apparently the parish council was inaugurated. The church “largely supports the concerns and concerns” of climate activists.
Traditional palm blessings took place throughout Styria on Sunday. In Weiz this year, some visitors had not only palm bushes, but also banners and high-visibility vests: supporters of the “Last Generation” disrupted the palm dedication with a protest for climate protection.
‘I didn’t want to prevent action’
According to a broadcast of “Last Generation Austria”, the parish council had been inaugurated in advance. “This protest was announced internally. We couldn’t prevent it, because this is a public square and this is allowed to happen in one square. We didn’t want to prevent it either, because there may be space. Because the church largely supports the worries and concerns of the last generation,” Weizer’s parish council and pastor Toni Herk are quoted as saying.
The activists say this campaign aims to draw attention to the urgency of the climate catastrophe during a traditional event, in order to preserve these types of practices for the future.
Activists see tradition in danger
“Our Easter traditions are sacred to us. They are part of our cultural heritage that we want to pass on to our children. But what use are traditions if we endanger the future in which they are supposed to exist? It is time that we not only preserve traditions, but also create a future worth living,” said Bernhard Kogler-Sobl, who took part in the protest.
