70 fire operations – storm caused trees to fall and power lines to be severed

Date:

If you could still walk around in a T-shirt on Saturday afternoon, you had to put on your winter coat again in the evening. According to the state alarm and warning center LAWZ, there were 70 fire brigade operations in Carinthia due to the temperature drop and showers. 900 households were without power.

Towards the end of the afternoon the sirens were already blaring in the Klagenfurter Schlachte bend. The Kalvarienberg fire brigade had to evacuate. A tree had blocked the Glan cycle path. The problem was resolved quickly. And a surfer got into distress at Lake Wörthersee. The Krumpendorf water rescue team was able to save the man in the lifeboat.

Parts of the roof were thrown onto the street
Firefighters and women were particularly affected by fallen trees. On Saturday evening, storms loosened parts of the roof of a building in Fürnitz and threw them onto the main road. “We were able to remove more loose sheet metal parts from the roof and place them back in the armory after about an hour,” said the Fürnitz volunteer fire brigade.

In Keutschach, a fallen tree blocked an access road. Comrades from the Keutschach fire brigade were able to quickly remove the tree with a forestry crane. And the Brückl fire brigade also had to move to Diexer Landesstraße due to fallen trees. Several trees were snapped in the vicinity of a small settlement.

Moving car hit by tree
The Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg districts were also severely affected. The fire brigade of Frantschach-St. Gertraud had to move twice. Trees had blocked the road and a driver luckily escaped shock when her car was hit and damaged by a tree while driving. And during the second mission, a trampoline had to be recovered that had been blown into the Lavant by strong winds.

“With the exception of the Hermagor district, all districts of Carinthia were affected. The focus was on the districts of Feldkirchen, St.Veit an der Glan, Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg. In some places there were wind gusts of around 60 km/h. In total, 56 fire brigades with approximately 500 emergency services responded to more than 70 storms or storm operations,” says Chief Fire Inspector Hans-Jörg Rossbacher of the LAWZ Carinthia. According to “Kärnten Netz”, around 900 households – mainly in the Lavanttal – were without power around 6:30 p.m. Here too, trees had fallen on lines.
