Almost nine out of ten gays in Austria have been discriminated against in recent years. Three-quarters of them attributed it to their sexual orientation, according to the first LGBTQIA+ health report. In 2021, 376 hate crimes were recorded.
These are collected from 2020, figures from the previous year are not published until July. According to the report, homophobic motives dominated hate crimes based on sexual orientation, while misogyny dominated gender. About two-thirds of the offenses involved crimes such as property damage, bodily injury, dangerous threats and coercion. They were usually committed in public.
Two young people are currently being held in St. Pölten after a possibly planned Islamic attack on the rainbow parade in Vienna on Saturday. The parade itself passed without incident, but in the evening a woman was beaten up in the center of Vienna. The perpetrators would have previously made homophobic remarks. In 2021, 376 such cases were recorded in Austria.
Other hate crimes in 2021 fell into the categories of religion (2052), national/ethnic origin (1874), religion (750) and disability (252). Since August 2020, the police have been extensively trained in recognizing and recording prejudice.
