Researchers from Wiener Neustadt monitor storms in Europe. Their forecast: more hail and another tornado. The ‘Krone’ searches for clues with the ‘Storm Hunter’ and looks back on the country’s worst storm disaster with 34 deaths.
“And now as for the weather: in the south of Lower Austria you can expect heavy showers again.” Such weather reports are increasing. It feels like the wind is always blowing here. But is that true? Alois Holzer, head of the European Institute for Severe Weather Research (ESSL) in Wiener Neustadt, provides information. And he says: “The last hot storm phase was around 1990, and in between it was a bit calmer. The wind has been increasing again since about 2015.” However, these are large-scale fluctuations in weather conditions that have nothing to do with climate change. “This is a natural process that always goes up and down,” emphasizes the experienced meteorologist.
