How to protect yourself? – Lice alarm in S-Bahn trains, sets withdrawn

Date:

A driver on the Vienna express train raises the alarm: trains have to be impounded every day due to a lice plague. Where do they come from and how can you protect yourself against them? asked the “Krone”.

“For the sake of our health, I hope for your support,” ended the anonymous letter from a suspected ÖBB train driver, which in addition to the “Krone” was also said to have been received by the Minister of Health and the Labor Inspectorate of Vienna. For many people, the attached “photo evidence” would probably make them throw up. Therefore (and to protect the privacy of the data subject) we have decided not to publish it.

Homeless man covered in lice
The photo shows an apparently homeless man covered from head to toe in lice. According to the whistleblower, he regularly sleeps on an S-Bahn on the main route Meidling-Floridsdorf. The gentleman was also allegedly filmed performing sexual acts on himself. Another homeless person allegedly used the S-Bahn “with open, smelly wounds.”

Sets are signed
“Every day, two to four sets are recorded and deloused with great difficulty,” the letter claims. Which the ÖBB also confirmed at the request of the “Krone”. However, “high hygiene standards” are always observed and affected trains are immediately “cleared, blocked, impounded and cleaned”. Employees are obliged to respond to such situations.

The staff was instructed to report the men’s journey. However, many boardings would go unnoticed because he could not keep track of those boarding from the driver’s cabin on busy platforms.

Bad consequences
“This is incomprehensible and an unreasonable expectation for staff and passengers,” he complains. The lice infestation of the trimmings can have bad consequences not only in terms of odor, but also in terms of health.

How do you protect yourself as a public transport driver?
Unfortunately, there is no 100% protection against the transmission of head lice. Because where many people gather in a small space, the annoying animals immediately feel at home. However, the risk can still be reduced with a few simple tips.

  • Tie up long hair – This reduces the risk of direct hair-to-hair contact.
  • Wear a headgear – Cap, hood, headband, hat: they all ensure that the parasites do not even reach the hair and scalp.
  • Control her – With the help of a nit comb, an infestation can be detected early and the lice have less time to multiply.

To act quickly
If you suffer from an infection, you must act as quickly as possible. Buy shampoo or lotion at the pharmacy and use it with the nit comb. Place combs and brushes in a hot soapy solution at 60 degrees for a few minutes. Wash the used clothing, bedding and towels in the washing machine at 60 degrees. Place all daily items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag and leave them for three days.

For advice, please contact the Hygiene Center of the City of Vienna (11, Rappachgasse 40). Delousing is also carried out immediately there.
