Israel responds to Spain saying recognizing Palestinian state would “reward terrorism”

Date:

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Haiat criticized Sánchez’s intentions and the statement signed by Spain, Ireland, Malta and Slovenia on Friday showing “willingness to recognize Palestine.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel haha accused this Monday to the chairman of the Spanish governmentPedro Sánchez, his stated intention to recognize the Palestinian state, because in his opinion this is tantamount to giving “a reward to terrorism.”

“This recognition after the October 7 massacre sends the message to Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations that the murderous terrorist attacks on Israelis will be met with political gestures towards the Palestinians,” the ministry spokesperson said in a statement this Monday, Lior Haiat.

Sánchez, who had expressed his intention at the beginning of March to recognize the Palestinian State outside the European Union (EU) in this parliamentary term, took part last Friday in a meeting with the prime ministers of Ireland, Malta and Slovenia in Brussels, where they discussed their “willingness to recognize Palestine,” according to a later joint statement.

According to the Israeli spokesperson, “the only way to combat Palestinian terrorism is to unequivocally condemn Hamas for the war crimes, crimes against humanity and sexual crimes it committed during the October 7 attack and continues to commit, and an explicit call to achieve the release of all hostages”.

“A resolution of the conflict will only be possible through direct negotiations between the parties,” the statement added, saying that the intention of these European countries “only takes away from reaching a solution and increases regional instability. ”

Are nine the EU countries who already recognizes it Palestinian state: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, all since 1988, and the vast majority due to their former membership of the Soviet Union. In addition, Sweden recognized Palestine in 2014 and thirteen others have a diplomatic office in East Jerusalem or Ramallah, including Spain.
