In Belgium, the sale of disposable e-cigarettes will be banned from next year. According to local Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke, the products are mainly aimed at young people. Furthermore, disposable e-cigarettes are harmful to both health and the environment.
The ban is part of the minister’s tobacco control plan. Smokers need to be motivated to quit. At the same time, the goal is to prevent people from starting to smoke. Vandenbroucke had already submitted a regulation to the European Commission in 2021 that would ban disposable e-cigarettes. The Belgian Health Minister said this was approved this week.
First country in the EU
Belgium is therefore the first country in the EU to ban these products. Disposable e-cigarettes are filled with a non-refillable, flavored liquid and have a non-rechargeable battery. After they are used, they become electronic waste. However, with traditional e-cigarettes the liquid can be refilled.
Approval for the move came from, among others, the Belgian association of e-cigarette retailers and distributors, VapeBel. Vaping should provide adults with an effective means to smoke less. Vandenbroucke says he is happy that the products will be removed from the market next year.
