Safety campaign – fitness check for seniors behind the wheel

Date:

As road traffic requirements become increasingly complex, there are now special events for the elderly in collaboration between the driving school and the ÖAMTC. Voluntary driver training is also offered.

The debates about driving in old age are usually extremely polarizing. Recently, a five-year validity limit for driving licenses for older drivers was even considered at EU level. Although the plans for mandatory driving tests are off the table for the time being, the ÖAMTC, the Seniors Association and the Easy Drivers driving school are taking a completely different approach. Namely very informative.

Many rely on driver’s licenses
The start of several such events took place in Gastern in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district. The location was not chosen at random: “Many seniors, especially in rural areas, depend on a driver’s license,” says driving school operator Martin Zarazik.

To ensure that they stay safe on the road, their knowledge of the old and new requirements on the road has been consolidated. “Cars are becoming increasingly complicated to drive and traffic has increased enormously,” say Easy Drivers bosses Walter Harm and Werner Fichtinger. But older drivers are less of a problem. “The entire road traffic system is becoming increasingly complex. Fitness to drive checks are therefore very important,” they said.

In addition to a lot of theory, at the end you could get behind the wheel as part of the driving safety training. “The approximately one hundred participants were very interested. There is definitely a demand for these types of events,” says Zarazik happily.
