A ship rammed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday evening – a video shows the bridge subsequently collapsing.
Fire Captain Andrew Doyle said on X: “A container ship struck the Key Bridge in Baltimore. Part of the bridge collapsed. There are several fire and police boats on their way.” According to media reports, the ship caught fire after colliding with a support pillar and eventually sank. Several vehicles and people fell into the Patapsco River below, CBS reports.
The road bridge is part of Interstate 695 and has four lanes – the extent of the damage to the bridge was not officially announced Tuesday morning. It is 2.6 kilometers long and approximately twelve million vehicles drive over the structure every year.
