Consumer prices in Austria continued to rise unabated over the past month. According to Statistics Austria, inflation rose to 7.2 percent in April compared to the same month last year. The last time inflation was this high was in October 1981. Compared to March, the price level has risen by 0.3 percent. Expenditure on transport and housing was responsible for three-fifths of the price increase.
“In addition to fuel and energy products, rising food prices are currently also responsible for the rise in inflation,” Tobias Thomas, director-general of Statistics Austria, said in a statement on Wednesday. The main price drivers relative to March were food (plus 2.1 percent), while package holidays (minus 19.2 percent) had a price dampening effect from the previous month.
In March inflation was 6.8 percent. In April, transport prices were already 17.7 percent higher on average than a year ago. Prices for housing, water and energy rose by an average of 9.4 percent. Food and non-alcoholic drinks increased by 8.4 percent, while restaurants and hotels increased their prices by an average of 6.4 percent. People had to pay 3.2 percent more for leisure and culture than a year ago.
