More than 60 injured in the accident that took place near Garmisch-Partenkirchen
At least three people were killed and many injured when a regional train operated by German railways Deutsche Bahn derailed this afternoon near the town of Garmisch Partenkirchen, in the Alpine region of Upper Bavaria, a spokesman for local authorities said. About 60 people need medical attention, 16 of them with serious injuries, after the accident, which took place in a convoy that had left Garmisch in the direction of Munich. The incident took place near the town of Burgrain, where three wagons apparently overturned after the train derailed for unknown reasons.
“People are being rescued through the windows of the carriages,” said a police spokesman, noting that many rescue troops from firefighters and ambulances, including helicopters, have gone to the accident site. “Maximum alert has been issued to all rescue forces,” a spokesman for the city’s regional emergency coordination agency said. The German automobile club ADAC reported that half a dozen helicopters, three of them from the club itself, are in action to transport the worst injured. Deutsche Bahn also proceeded to close the railway line between Garmisch Partenkirchen and the town of Oberau.
