Israel hunts Hezbollah – Syria: Dozens killed in series of air strikes

Date:

In Syria, activists say at least 42 people have been killed in heavy airstrikes in Aleppo province. In addition to Syrian army members, at least six members of the Lebanese Hezbollah were also among the fatalities, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday. Accordingly, the suspected Israeli attacks targeted a missile depot belonging to the Shia organization Hezbollah.

When asked, the Israeli military said it would not comment on the report. Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital Beirut initially also made no comment.

Syria blames Israel
Syria’s state news agency SANA, citing a military source, reported that both civilians and soldiers were killed and injured in the attacks. Neither SANA nor Syrian television gave an exact number of casualties. They blamed Israel for the bombings.

Various recordings from the bombed area are circulating on Twitter. The authenticity of the videos cannot be verified.

The Israeli Air Force is repeatedly bombing targets in neighboring Syria in an attempt to prevent Iran and its allied militias such as Hezbollah from expanding their military influence in the country. The number of Israeli attacks has increased since the start of the Gaza war in early October. However, such high numbers of victims are rare.

Area near airport bombed
‘According to the Observatory, the attacks took place at dawn in an area near Aleppo International Airport. Some factories were also affected. The Observatory gets its information from a network of different sources in Syria. The information is often difficult to independently verify.

Eyewitnesses from the province reported heavy smoke in the bombed areas and dozens of ambulances rushing to the area. Syrian government forces closed off the areas.

Simultaneous drone attacks
The Syrian Defense Ministry reported that Israel and militant groups attacked several areas in the Aleppo area from the air around 1:45 a.m. local time. “The attacks killed and injured a number of civilians and military personnel and caused material damage to public and private property,” the ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The attacks occurred at the same time as drone strikes from Idlib and the western Aleppo countryside, which the authority said were carried out by “terrorist organizations.” However, the ministry did not provide a specific death toll and did not say whether the casualties were caused by Israeli airstrikes or attacks by militant groups.
