London police’s counter-terrorism unit has launched an investigation following the stabbing death of a Persian-speaking journalist in Britain. Scotland Yard announced this on Friday evening.
The man, aged between 30 and 40, was attacked in the Wimbledon area in the afternoon. He suffered injuries to his leg during the incident, but these are not believed to be life-threatening.
Knife attack on journalists
The police initially provided no information about the attacker(s). According to a report in the Telegraph, one man allegedly started talking to him while another attacked him with a knife. Both are said to have then fled in a car driven by a third person.
The motive was also initially unknown. However, the anti-terrorism unit took over the investigation because a Persian-speaking journalist was involved and a number of threats had recently been made against this group, the statement continued.
Motive still unclear
“I must emphasize that at this early stage in our investigation we do not know the reason why this victim was attacked and there could be a number of explanations,” said Dominic Murphy, head of the counter-terrorism unit.
However, he understands the great concern the incident may cause, especially among journalists and people with an Iranian background.
According to police, since 2022 there have been a number of foiled kidnapping or even assassination plans against Britons or people in Britain considered opponents of the Iranian government.
