Imminent danger – bomb alarm among Styrian Jehovah’s Witnesses

Date:

Bomb alert among Jehovah’s Witnesses in Kalsdorf in Styria! A suspicious package was found at the entrance on Friday evening. The police cannot rule out that it was an explosive. The investigation is progressing quickly.

This report brings back terrible memories of the attack on Jehovah’s Witnesses in Leibnitz last summer – explosives attached to two cars exploded during and after a prayer session: As Markus Lamb, press spokesman for the State Police Directorate on Holy Saturday, reports, it was report made on Friday evening around 8:30 pm refunded. A suspicious, larger, box-like package was found in the entrance to the religious community in Kalsdorf.

A major alert was declared, the area was cordoned off and about 50 residents were evacuated as the worst had to be assumed. After the first assessments it could not be ruled out that it was a bomb. Explosives experts, sniffer dogs and the emergency response unit were called in. When suspicions grew that it might actually be a bomb – its contents resembled those of an explosive due to the wiring – the defuse service of the Directorate of Special Forces intervened. They examined the object using X-ray equipment and robots, but even then no ‘all clear’ could be given.

Highest security level activated
So it was clear: the part had to go! To transport the questionable package, a special four-ton device was requested from Vienna – which was presented by the police around Easter last year. The package is currently being carefully examined in a secure location.

“Nobody knew what was going on”
A connection with last summer’s explosion cannot therefore be ruled out. As a result, security measures for all facilities of Jehovah’s Witnesses have been raised to the highest level. “If anyone notices anything suspicious, do not hesitate and call 133 immediately!” calls Lamb.

The residents around the house of worship are obviously in shock. Only a few people want to talk about what happened, and if so, only anonymously. The fear is too great. The mayor and former deputy police director were on site that evening and praised the professional conduct of the police (see video). “We were asked not to leave our apartments and houses. No one knew what was going on, it was scary,” a resident describes the anxious hours.
