Pope Francis celebrated the traditional Easter vigil on Saturday evening with around 8,000 believers. First the Easter fire was inaugurated in the Vatican Basilica and then the Easter candle was lit with it. The Pope reached the altar in a wheelchair.
The candles that were lit during the entry into the still dark St. Peter’s Basilica symbolize the resurrection of Jesus, which is celebrated by Christians worldwide. During the Easter vigil, Francis baptized eight adults from Albania, Japan, Korea and Italy, among others.
Although his voice sounded weak at times, the Pope delivered the sermon. “Sometimes we feel as if a tombstone has been placed heavily over the entrance to our heart, choking life, destroying trust, trapping us in the grave of fear and bitterness, and blocking the path to joy and hope .’ ‘Bulners of death’ we would encounter people along the way, for example when suffering and dying of loved ones. Fears would keep us from “achieving all good things (…).”
Health problems after bronchitis
As reported, the Stations of the Cross in the Colosseum in Rome on Good Friday took place without the Pope. The head of the Roman Catholic Church has been suffering from bronchitis in recent weeks and has been staying at the Santa Marta guest house to rest (see video above). Francis joined the prayers of those gathered in the Colosseum, the Vatican said.
Tightened security measures in Rome
The strictest security measures are in force in Rome around Easter celebrations. Anti-terrorism units and special police forces monitor the area around the Vatican. The area around St. Peter’s Square was cordoned off and equipped with metal detectors. Pilgrims could watch the ceremony with the Pope on screens from St. Peter’s Square.
Tomorrow, Sunday, Francis will celebrate Easter Mass on St. Peter’s Square from 10 a.m. From the basilica he gives the blessing “Urbi et orbi”. A maximum of 60,000 people are expected.
