Bulgaria and Romania will partially join the European Schengen area on Sunday. This eliminates access controls at airports and shipping. Travelers from both countries no longer have to fly to other EU countries via the international terminals.
However, authorities continue to check identity cards at the land borders. This concerns car and truck drivers who, for example, travel via Hungary or Greece to Romania or Bulgaria. As reported, the EU countries reached an agreement at the end of December on the partial accession of the two countries to the Schengen area.
Austria’s veto
The Austrian government in particular is against the complete abolition of land border controls. She justifies this with the high number of irregular entries via the Balkan route. In early March, Chancellor Nehammer (ÖVP) said during a meeting with Romanian President Johannis in Bucharest that there was still “no concrete timetable” for full admission to the Schengen area.
